F is for Freitag

FREITAG makes bags and accessories from used and, increasingly, circular materials. The company was founded in Zurich in 1993 by two brothers whose last name literally translates to "Friday".

In the late 1990s, the Swiss supermarket chain Migros briefly launched its own bag copy called Donnerstag (Thursday). Thirty years later, in 2023, FREITAG humorously revived the story by releasing an upcycled original limited-edition Donnerstag bag. It’s the kind of storytelling we like at PROVENCE.

O is for Original

FREITAG’s headquarters in Zurich are just a short ride from our own Zurich office. Although PROVENCE was established in 2009 in Nice (France)—or at least pretended so. Proof? Au Café. In 2018, we founded our non-profit association in Switzerland. PROVENCE publishes an annual publication, sends out a weekly newsletter, curates exhibitions and art fair booths, and acts as an agency and lab for our team members and extended network. Every year we issue over 100 press passes which grant (no guarantee) free access to museums and art institutions.

M is for Must-have

The strength of PROVENCE lies in its structure: all team members have their own practices; as artists, writers, curators, photographers, stylists, hoteliers, parents, horse breeders, shop owners,  and spend time on PROVENCE whenever they can (or not). We are chronically underfinanced. Having you as a member not only supports us financially, it also makes you an ambassador for our collective effort to keep an independent voice alive in the art world and beyond.
